Ant Questions

Where can I find Insect Lore Live Ant Hill Instructions?

How do I transfer the ants into the habitat?

If your habitat requires prior set up, please do this before you receive the ants, as they will need to be transferred over as soon as possible.

As the ants are very agile, we advise placing them in the fridge for about 20 mins before you transfer them, this will make them slightly docile and less likely to try and escape!  If your ants have arrived in soil, try and separate them as much as possible as the soil may cause an issue if transferred into the Super Forest Ant or Ant Hill.

How do I care for my Live Ant Hill?

It is best to place your Live Ant Hill® in a quiet, secure spot where everyone can have a clear view of the habitat. You don’t want to disturb your ants while they are busy building their rooms and tunnels.

Every 3-4 days, a few drops of water should be added to the sand.  Try not to drop the water in the rounded area as too much water could collect at the bottom and the ants could drown.

Should I provide water for my ants in the Ant Hill?

Yes, every 3-4 days squeeze a few drops of water into the sand area, using a dropper or by wetting a small piece of tissue and gently squeezing the drops in.  Try not to drop the water into the rounded area as too much water can collect in the base and the ants could drown.

It is very important not to overwater the ants!

Should I provide food for my ants?

If you have the Ant Hill habitat or one of your own, then yes you will need to feed them.  If you have the Super Forest Ant, the gel will provide the nutrition.

Ants eat bran flakes, carrots and apples. The food should be about the size of an unpopped popcorn kernel. Once the food has disappeared, replace it with a fresh piece. Do not overfeed.  Ants are also partial to tiny amounts of honey or sugar water.

Do my ants have enough air in the Ant Hill?

Yes, the dome of the Live Ant Hill along with the small air holes in the lid provide enough air for their tiny lungs.

Can I touch my ants?

No, do not open the Live Ant Hill® or Super Forest Ant to touch your ants.

Should I release my ants?

No, the ants should remain within the Ant Hill or Super Forest Ant for the entirety of their life cycle. Without a queen they will not survive outside to form their own colony. Their life cycle should last 2-4 weeks, possibly longer.
