The Insect Lore Butterfly Garden gives children, students and families an unforgettable opportunity to watch caterpillars change into chrysalides and then emerge as beautiful Painted Lady Butterflies. The, raise and feed your very own butterflies and then release them into the wild! The entire transformation from caterpillar to adult butterfly takes about three to five weeks.

See An Amazing Transformation with the Butterfly Garden

When your 3-5 caterpillars arrive, they will be in a clear plastic cup with all of the nutritious food they need. Place the cup in a safe place away from direct sunlight. The caterpillars will remain in the cup and will eat, spin silk and grow to TEN times their original size! After seven to ten days they will hang upside down and harden into chrysalides.

Raise Your Very Own Butterflies

When the chrysalides have hardened, gently move them to the pop-up butterfly habitat. It will take about seven to ten more days for them to complete the transformation to adult butterflies. Lastly, once you butterflies have emerged - let 'em go! 

The Butterfly Garden Habitat is a reusable, cylindrical mesh container perfect for up-close butterfly viewing! When not in use it folds flat for easy storage. Then when you wish to raise more butterflies, just order a refill Cup of Caterpillars here.

Doe it come with the caterpillars I am a bit confused?
Hello Violette, The kit can either come with a voucher to redeem for the caterpillars later (perfect for gifts) or Live Caterpillars. When you click 'Select options' on the product page, you will be able to select the chosen option.
How long will the caterpillars be ok in the packaging? I need to buy a birthday present but it's on a Sunday so no deliveries

Hello, I have a butterfly emerging from its cocoon but it appears to be stick to the cocoon despites its efforts to get out from it since this early morning. Should I gently remove its cocoon to help it? Thanks!

Hi, I'm at the Chrysalides stage with my caterpillars. 1 is still yet to cocoon but of the cocoon have fallen off the lid. Do i transfer the fallen cocoons to the butterfly kit?
Hello Nolene, Your caterpillars are roughly the same age. This last caterpillar just might need a little more time to ingest enough nutrients to make the transformation. Just give it a couple more days! Once it does form you will then need to wait 3 days before moving all of the chrysalis over. If you are still waiting for the last one to climb to the top of the cup 7 days after the first chrysalis formed, you will need to transfer the chrysalides into the hatching habitat and replace the lid with a piece of kitchen paper secured with an elastic band. This will give the last one something to attach to! Do not worry about fallen chrysalis as this happens in the wild and the caterpillar should emerge as normal. When you are ready to transfer the chrysalides over to the habitat (3 days after the last one in the pot has formed) gently scoop any fallen ones up with a spoon and place on a piece of kitchen paper at the bottom of the habitat near the edge and they should be perfectly fine. You may need to give them a gentle clean with a cotton bud to remove any silk or frass from them.
